Mr Starr wins Spring Raffle 2017
St Clare Hospice awarded £2,000 to its lucky Spring Raffle 2017 winner, Michael Starr from Saffron Walden, whose ticket was drawn by Cheryl Armitage, St Clare’s Director of Income Generation, on Friday 31 March.
Mr Starr, accompanied by his wife Mrs Vera Starr, collected his winnings from the Hastingwood-based charity’s 27th annual Spring Raffle.
Mr Starr said: “I’ve been a St Clare lottery player for many years now, playing it every week. We put the whole family in – even the dogs! We like to support St Clare as we’ve had family members cared for by the hospice. I used to sell a lot of raffle tickets to help with fundraising for St Clare and I very rarely come out winning the top prize – so it’s lovely to win the St Clare Spring Raffle!”
The couple is yet to decide what to do with their prize winnings, but is keen to mark the occasion by putting it to good use and making some home improvements.
Runner-up Spring Raffle prize-winners were: Sheila Carpenter from Norwich, winning the £1,000 2nd prize, and Betty Gannicott from Theydon Bois, winning the 3rd prize of £500.
Mrs Gannicott looks forward to using her winnings as spending-money on holiday when she goes to Spain this May. She added, “I’ve never, ever won anything before! I was in shock when I got the call from St Clare and asked them if they were sure it was mine! It was a lovely surprise.”
This year’s Spring Raffle has raised more than £20,000 in vital funding for St Clare.
Cheryl Armitage, St Clare Director of Income Generation, said: “Every year we are able to provide care for more and more people in need – and it’s all thanks to the support of people in our community who take part in fundraising campaigns like the Spring Raffle, that we are able to do so.”
“The valuable funds raised by the Spring Raffle will go towards maintaining the fabulous quality of care our nurses and doctors provide every single day to patients with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones, all free of charge. We are hugely thankful to everyone who bought a ticket and took part in helping their local hospice. It is thanks to your generosity that we can continue to grow and expand our services for everybody who needs us.”
