John studied at University College London where he obtained a degree in Physiology before qualifying in medicine in 1985.

In 1993, he was appointed as Consultant in Palliative Medicine at St Joseph’s Hospice in London, and since July 2003 he has been Medical Director at St Clare and Honorary Consultant at Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust.

John is actively involved in teaching and research and in 2013 he was awarded an MD (Res) degree by the University of London. He teaches on courses based at several universities and was appointed a University of Cambridge Senior Clinical Tutor in 2007. John has published scientific papers and reviews, written chapters for several textbooks, authored books and participated in national and European expert committees in the formulation of guidelines in palliative care.
