SUMMARY:St Clare Masterclass: Prescribing opioids - the pitfalls and challenges
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Arjun Kingdon for a free lunchtime lecture exploring the pitfalls and challenges of prescribing opioids. \nOpioids (narcotics) are used with or without non-opioids to treat moderate to severe pain. They are often a necessary part of a pain relief plan for cancer patients. Progress has occurred in the management of cancer pain\, yet under-treatment persists. Additionally\, new challenges are threatening these advances. These challenges are numerous and include educational deficits\, time restraints\, and difficulties with side-effects and tolerance. Dr Qamar Abbas will deliver this talk to address those pitfalls and challenges and suggest ideas to deal with those. \nDr Arjun Kingdon is a Consultant in Palliative Medicine at St Clare Hospice and Princess Alexandra Hospital. \nBooking is now closed.

SUMMARY:St Clare Masterclass: Sexuality in palliative care
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Syed Qamar Abbas for a free lunchtime lecture exploring sexuality in palliative care. \nSexuality is an important issue for many patients with serious illnesses and their partners\, yet this is a subject that health care professionals often do not address in the palliative care context. Sexuality is intrinsic to a person’s sense of self throughout their lifespan\, and it can be a vital form of expression that helps to relieve suffering\, offer meaning\, and maintain interpersonal connection in the face of serious illness. Dr Qamar Abbas will address issues around sexuality and ways to address those issues in this talk. \nDr Syed Qamar Abbas is the Medical Director and Consultant in Palliative Medicine at St Clare Hospice and Princess Alexandra Hospital. He also holds the titles of Senior Clinical Tutor at University of Cambridge and Associate Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University\, Chelmsford. He speaks from his experience and his involvement in palliative care for more than 21 years. \nThis event has now taken place. \n  \n  \n
