On behalf of the whole St Clare team, we would like to thank you for your ongoing support of the Hospice, especially over the past very difficult year. With thanks to our amazing supporters, St Clare has been able to adapt and grow their hospice services so that even more local people can continue to receive vital care .

We hope that our latest Hospice News shared our gratitude and appreciation for all your support during the COVID pandemic. If you haven’t seen our latest Newsletter, please see the bottom of this page for a link to view our PDF version. You can also sign up to receive future mailings here too.

Today, we also wanted to share a story from Peter and Julie Rose who have been loyal volunteers here at St Clare for eight years. We spoke to them about their experience of volunteering during the COVID pandemic.

Peter & Julie’s Story

We first started volunteering for St Clare in the Harlow Shop, back in 2013, after hearing about the great work the Hospice does for people in our local community. Since retiring, we’ve found it very rewarding to spend our spare time helping to raise money for such an amazing cause.

We’ve made such lovely friends whilst volunteering for St Clare – all of the staff , volunteers and supporters that we meet are always so kind and thankful for our help. Volunteering for St Clare is such a fulfilling thing to do when you can see first-hand how your hard work has helped to raise vital funds for the Hospice, and make a difference.

Over the past year, all of the St Clare shops have had to close for long periods of time due to the COVID restrictions. This has caused a huge loss in vital income for the charity – and also, personally, it has meant a large part of our weekly routine has been missing. We’re so used to keeping busy, and we missed the buzz we get when we help support St Clare. So rather than sitting back and doing nothing, we looked for new ways to help the Hospice in any way we could.

When the summer lockdown ended, we were so pleased to be back in the Harlow shop, helping to deep clean the store, and put in place all the new measures so that the shop could open safely for shoppers and donators. We were delighted to welcome people back to the shop over the summer, but then of course we went into another lockdown in December.

Over the Christmas period, we helped the fundraising team with their Christmas tree recycling campaign which involved us driving around West Essex and East Hertfordshire collecting Christmas trees from local houses in exchange for kind donations. It was really good fun and kept us really busy during the winter lockdown, all whilst raising over £14,000 for the Hospice. We were so happy to be given the opportunity to continue to help St Clare during the pandemic.

St Clare is such a special place and we always like to help in any way that we can, whether that be through volunteering, donating or helping to spread awareness. Today, we are asking if you could do the same. As a charity, St Clare needs to raise £8,000 each and every day to run their Hospice services. With many fundraising events having been postponed, and the charity shops shut for long periods of time, any gift you can give today will help St Clare continue to be there for people in your local community.

£20 could pay for 120 syringes which are used every day on our Inpatient Unit
£40 could pay for essential clinical supplies for eight patients for one day
£60 could pay for 4 one-hour counselling sessions for a bereaved child

On behalf of everyone at St Clare Hospice, we want to say thank you to the people of West Essex and East Hertfordshire for supporting your local hospice. Your support is appreciated now more than ever.

Best wishes,
Peter & Julie
