"I chose St Clare for my work experience as I hope to train as a doctor. I wanted to gain an understanding of all areas of medicine, as well as to learn what it is like in a hospice environment."

“During the week I spent doing my work experience alongside the Inpatient team, I got to meet the Hospice’s Chief Executive and one of the consultants who specialises in palliative care, who were both amazing role models and kindly shared their experience with me. It was great to be able to learn from them and they answered any questions I had.

I also got the chance to work alongside the reception volunteers, which was a great opportunity to see the different people coming in and out of the Hospice. There were family members and friends coming to see patients and other volunteers and staff constantly coming and going.

Now I help out for two hours each week at St Clare’s specialist music and book shop in Bishop’s Stortford as part of my Duke of Edinburgh Award. I help organise the DVDs, books and musical instruments as well as using the computer to record Gift Aid information.

Volunteering at the shop has mainly helped improve my communication skills as I have to talk to staff and customers a lot and also follow instructions. I can also use both my volunteering experiences to develop my Oxbridge university application.

I thoroughly enjoy volunteering at the shop because there is always a job which needs doing and it pleases me to know that the work I am doing is for a good cause.”
