Trustee with Finance/Accounting expertise


St Clare Hospice is searching for a trustee with senior strategic financial experience, preferably a highly experienced accountant.

Experience of charity accounting is desirable, but not essential – we are primarily looking for someone who is able to contribute to the Board with a good understanding of how a charity can best use its resources for delivery of outstanding patient care services and sustain its services for the future; the Hospice has recently launched an ambitious strategy for the hospice that looks to the next 10-20 years and is in good financial health.  It is preferable for candidates to live in or near West Essex/East Hertfordshire, as some Board meetings are held in person.

Likely time commitment:  approx. 4 hrs per quarter + reading time. (Board meetings are 2hrs each quarter and one committee meeting of 2hrs each quarter).

Person Specification

Experience – Essential

• Qualified accountant with strategic finance experience.

• Experience of successfully working in a financial leadership role, ideally in an organisation with service delivery and/or customer service at its heart.

• Experience of successfully interpreting complex information, business planning and risk management and working with non-finance colleagues.

• Experience of acting as a credible ambassador for an organisation.


Experience – Desirable

• Experience of charity financial accounting.

• An understanding of charity structures (such as trading subsidiaries in relation to the main charity) and charity reserves.

• An understanding of the healthcare sector.

• Direct user experience of hospice care (St Clare Hospice is committed to service user involvement at all levels within the hospice).

• Experience of acting as a charity trustee

• Understanding and acceptance of the role of a Board of Trustees of a charity (including the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of Trusteeship).
• A willingness and ability to devote the necessary time and effort to attend Board and other meetings, including preparing and reading for those meetings, and to participate in the effective governance and management of the Charity.

• A willingness to be an ambassador for St Clare Hospice in promoting the charity to potential funders and donors, partner organisations, networks of opinion formers and others.

• A high standard of integrity, impartiality, transparency and objectivity.
