John’s story
John was a much-loved retired schoolmaster – clever, kind and known throughout his village for his daily walks.
After being diagnosed with colon cancer, he chose to live a life on his own terms, enjoying precious years with his family before his health declined. When that time came, St Clare Hospice was there. Gently at first, with advice, visits and reassurance. Then more fully as John’s needs grew.
When caring for John at home became too difficult, our Inpatient Unit welcomed him with exceptional kindness.
“It makes me emotional now,” Vicki, his daughter, shared. “Because you like to think people are generally kind, but the kindness we experienced from everyone connected to the Hospice was extraordinary.”
Today, Vicki is a Friend for Life. “I can’t tell you how grateful we are for everything St Clare did for Dad and for us. I’ll make sure I keep telling our story – the story of the amazing St Clare – to everyone and anyone.”
