Join St Clare Hospice's team as a reception volunteer and help make a difference for people in West Essex and across the East Hertfordshire borders.

We need you!

We are looking for a warm, friendly individual to join our Hospice team as a Reception Volunteer.

As the first point of contact, you ensure visitors and callers receive excellent customer service by offering information, assistance, and directing them promptly to the appropriate person or department. You help create a welcoming, supportive environment while maintaining efficient reception and administrative processes.

What are the key tasks of Reception Volunteers?

  • Welcome all visitors at the main reception, providing a friendly, professional first impression and directing them to the appropriate person or department.
  • Escort or guide visitors to the Inpatient Unit when they are visiting a patient.
  • Maintain a clean, tidy, and welcoming reception area, including replenishing refreshments and consumables, and taking used cups to and from the kitchen.
  • Offer refreshments to visitors while they are waiting for appointments.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with data protection requirements by safeguarding personal information and ensuring the reception desk remains clear of confidential documents.
  • Develop and maintain a basic understanding of the Hospice’s services and projects to ensure visitors and callers are directed to the most appropriate team or service.
  • Provide administrative and ad hoc support to Hospice staff as required.
  • Assist visitors wishing to purchase items from the Hospice Reception shop, providing friendly and efficient customer service.
  • Confidently and securely accept donations from visitors, thanking them for their generosity and ensuring they feel their contribution is valued. Complete the appropriate donation receipt accurately before passing the donation and supporting documentation to the Fundraising Team in line with Hospice procedures.

Working hours: 8am – 12pm or 12pm – 4pm

What skills, experience or personal qualities will I need as a Reception Volunteer?

  • Confident and approachable, with the ability to make visitors feel welcome and at ease.
  • Comfortable supporting bereaved, distressed, or anxious visitors with empathy, sensitivity, and compassion.
  • Friendly, calm, and reassuring manner, with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Good knowledge of the Hospice’s services, activities, and charitable work, or a willingness to learn, enabling you to speak confidently about the organisation.
  • A strong team player who works well with others and is willing to support colleagues and volunteers when needed.
  • Able to work independently, using initiative and sound judgement when appropriate.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with a wide range of people.
  • Confident using a telephone system and directing calls accurately and efficiently.
  • A good understanding of confidentiality, data protection, and the importance of handling sensitive information appropriately.
