What is Namaste Care?

An elderly person holds a carer's handsNamaste Care is an internationally-recognised care programme, developed by Joyce Simard in the USA, for people with advanced dementia. The word ‘Namaste’ is a Hindi greeting that means to ‘honour the spirit within,’ as is the guiding principle of Namaste Care.

This respectful and supportive approach to care for those living with advanced dementia focuses on person-centred care using individualised, therapeutic activities. These include sensory stimulation of the five senses (touch, hearing, sight, smell and taste). Multi-sensory techniques include things like music, therapeutic touch and massage, aromatherapy, and food and drink.

Namaste Care at St Clare Hospice

A man holds a juggling ballThe Namaste Care Dementia Support project at St Clare operates by delivering training to both unpaid carers and paid care staff within the local community of West Essex and East Herts, who look after people living with advanced dementia. This training course is delivered by our dedicated team of Namaste Champions, who also offer ongoing peer support and monthly group sessions to all those who have attended the Namaste Care course.

The course aims to give an introduction to Namaste Care, training and empowering carers to deliver high-quality, compassionate care to local people living with advanced dementia.

Do you care for or support someone with advanced dementia?

Do you work in a care home, or support someone at home who is living with advanced dementia? If you live or work in West Essex and East Herts, you could be eligible to attend our free Namaste Care training course. The training will empower you to deliver high-quality, compassionate care to the people who you care for. Whether you are an unpaid, informal carer, looking after a friend or family member, or if you are a paid carer – we’d love to hear from you.

Our Namaste Champions are here to deliver the Namaste Care training course to you, whilst providing ongoing support to you in the months and years ahead of your experience as a carer. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet other carers working with people who have advanced dementia, where you’ll be able to benefit from mutual, peer support from others who understand both the challenges, and rewards, of your role.

‘You matter because you are you, and you matter until the end of your life’
