Namaste Dementia Care at St Clare

Namaste Dementia Care is a free, personalised service for people living with advanced dementia, who are in the communities of West Essex and East Herts.

The service involves trained Namaste Dementia Care volunteers delivering one-to-one, personalised Namaste Care sessions, to a person in their own home (with their carer present), or residential home. The sessions take place weekly and last up to 2 hours each, with a course of up to 10 sessions offered to individuals.

Namaste Dementia Care sessions are open for referrals. Please get in touch to access the service, or complete the referral form below.

What is Namaste Care?

Namaste Care is an internationally-recognised care programme, developed by Joyce Simard in the USA, for people with advanced dementia. The word ‘Namaste’ is a Hindi greeting that means to ‘honour the spirit within,’ as is the guiding principle of Namaste Care.

Namaste Care is a person-centred approach, supporting people with advanced dementia to engage in meaningful activities to promote an improved quality of life.

These activities may include:

  • offering gentle touch, e.g. through hand massage
  • playing favourite music
  • making and looking through a memory box
  • reading favourite books and poems
  • encouraging gentle movement

‘You matter because you are you, and you matter until the end of your life’

– Dame Cecily Saunders, founder of the hospice care movement
