This year, we need to raise £8.1 million to continue providing our care.
Every year, hundreds of families across west Essex and the eastern Hertfordshire borders turn to St Clare Hospice during the most difficult moments of their lives.
With NHS funding covering just 30% of our costs, we rely on donations from across all local communities to keep providing vital care.
Meaning your gift has the power to make sure families like Gracie’s receive the compassionate care and support they need during life’s hardest moments.
Philanthropy gifts make a difference

Gracie started attending St Clare Hospice for bereavement support after her dad died. She was only five when Simon was diagnosed and seven when he passed away.
“Her being sad made me sad, obviously. I’d hear her sometimes muffling her crying. I’d ask her if everything was alright and she’d say she didn’t want to cry in front of me because she didn’t want me to be sad. It was terrible. It was like a vicious circle.
“And then the [St Clare] Echo Connect group came up. And she’s literally a different girl. I think it’s just the fact she’s with people who’ve lost someone as well. She doesn’t feel she’s on her own. And do you know what – I’m okay. I’m okay as long as she’s okay.”
– Ellie, Gracie’s mum and Simon’s partner

Donating Shares to St Clare Hospice
If you own small quantities of shares that aren’t worth selling due to the associated costs, there’s a meaningful alternative. A charitable organisation called ShareGift offers a way to put these shares to good use. You can donate your small shareholdings to ShareGift at no cost. They pool together similar donations until they have enough to sell, then use the proceeds to support charities, including St Clare Hospice, if you choose to recommend us. About St Clare Hospice
Is St Clare Hospice a charity?
St Clare Hospice is a charity providing specialist palliative care to improve the lives of people affected by a life-limiting illness in west Essex and the borders of east Hertfordshire. Our care helps patients, their families, and carers, to make the most of every moment together, no matter how long they have left to live. We support them both at home and in the Hospice.
What is St Clare Hospice’s mission?
Building on the firm foundations of our last strategy, our “St Clare Hospice 2022+ Strategy” is an ambitious continuation of the key aims and vision.
The strategy looks to strengthen the newly developed areas of listening and partnership, build upon the volunteer-led social support programmes around death, dying, and loss and extend the reach of our professional education programme.
How philanthropic gifts make a difference for St Clare
What is a philanthropic gift?
At St Clare, we are grateful for any gift you can give. We define a gift of £1,000 or more to be philanthropic.
Why should I give St Clare Hospice a philanthropic gift?
Every year, hundreds of families across west Essex and the eastern Hertfordshire borders turn to St Clare Hospice during the most difficult moments of their lives. With NHS funding covering just 30% of our costs, we rely on philanthropic gifts to keep providing vital care.
What impact does my philanthropic gift have?
- £3,000 – Could pay for over two weeks of night home visits (24 visits) by one of our Hospice at Home healthcare assistants. Having a night sitter stay with a patient overnight can be an absolute lifeline for people with a life-limiting condition, and their family, who are often caring for them round the clock. It means their family can get a good night’s sleep, knowing their loved one is being cared for.
- £10,000 – Could pay towards the cost of running the Patient and Family Support Service team for 5 days. The Patient and Family Support Service works holistically to meet patients’ practical, emotional, spiritual and social needs, as well as offering support for friends and family. The team includes social workers, bereavement counsellors and a chaplain.
- £16,421 – Your donation could cover the cost of running all of St Clare Hospice’s services for 24 hours.
