Loughton based firm, Haslers Chartered Accountants, took their staff out of the frying pan of the business world and into the fire here at St Clare Hospice on Thursday 18th May. The company hosted a Firewalk within the Hospice grounds, and aim to raise £10,000 for St Clare.
The event entailed forty fierce fire-walkers, nearly half the Haslers workforce, marching bare-foot across hot embers in memory of their former employee, Charlotte James, who lost her battle with cancer at age 20 at St Clare in 2014.
Fundraising took place with the ethos of the more donations; the more Haslers staff would take part. The event has already raised over £7,000 and the team aim to smash their £10,000 target when all sponsorship has been collected. Supporters had the chance to nominate those colleagues they wanted to see take on the fiery plunge, which saw 8 Partners of the firm, as well as Haslers’ Chairman Jon O’Shea, take on the sizzling saunter.
Amongst the brave fire-walkers were two members of our Inpatient Unit team: Vanna Poulter the IPU Manager, and Essie Ducat, a nursing assistant who cared for Charlotte James during her stay. One of the most moving moments of the evening was when Essie, proudly wearing her nursing uniform, crossing the burning embers and calling out, “For Charlotte”.
Amy Jacobs, St Clare Corporate Partnerships Manager, said:
“The turnout for the challenge was absolutely fantastic, and Haslers have raised an incredible amount for the Hospice. With the nerves steaming away and the embers blazing in the evening twilight, it was inspiring to see people swallowing their fear and taking the walk of faith in honour of Charlotte and the Hospice. We’re blown away by the support we’ve received, and are so grateful to everyone who donated and took part in the event. It is fantastic to see the innovative ways that businesses are finding to work with and support St Clare. Thank you to Haslers, a company who – from top to bottom – have an ethos of social responsibility that we should be proud of as members of their local community.”
The Chairman of Haslers, Jon O’Shea, said:
“We were delighted to take on this challenge for St Clare in honour of our friend and former employee, Charlotte James. St Clare makes such a difference to families going through an incredibly tough time and we wanted to do something memorable to raise vital funds and awareness for our local hospice. It was exhilarating to take on the challenge of walking across fiery embers – you have to be a brave sole to take it on! The event really brought our staff members together as a team and it was very rewarding to give something back to the Hospice in memory of Charlotte.”
