Our Carers’ Group offers support to people caring for someone close
There are a number of ways that a person can be affected by the pressures of caring for a friend or relative, whether they are providing personal care or simply things like doing the shopping or taking them to appointments regularly. Things like stress, fatigue and exhaustion are common – and will be things that we look to address within the group.
Our Carers’ Group is a support service for anyone living in West Essex and East Hertfordshire who offers regular assistance to a friend or relative. The group offers information, skills and support to people throughout the experience of caring for a loved one with a life-limiting illness.
Led by our Day Therapy team, the Carers’ Group follows a tailor-made, seven-week programme, which runs four times a year. With a focus on skill-based learning, as well as group discussion, and professional and peer support, our participants meet weekly throughout the duration of the course.
The course is designed to educate and support carers on both how to offer the best care to a relative, but also the importance of looking after themselves.
Peer support plays a large role in our Carers’ Group. Through connecting with others in a similar situation, the groups will facilitate a safe space for carers to explore and express their emotions and concerns through group discussions and peer support.
The sessions also provide support around practical issues such as preparing for the end of life, financial guidance and navigating the care system. The Carers’ Group also explores how to better care for a relative – including technique-based skills such as mindfulness, hand massage, moving and handling a person, diet and nutrition, physiotherapy and more.
