St Clare Hospice’s children and family therapist Amanda Orange has shared advice on how to support children who have been bereaved in a new CBeebies Parenting podcast that was aired during Children’s Grief Awareness Week (November 17-23).

The episode, recorded at London’s Broadcasting House and available to download via BBC Sounds, focuses on one of the most sensitive and important topic families face: how to talk to children about death, dying and loss.

Amanda was asked by podcast hosts Radio 1 presenter Katie Thistleton and rapper Guvna B, to share her insight on how adults can support children through difficult emotions with honesty, sensitivity and reassurance. Her contribution shines a national spotlight on the vital work St Clare Hospice does to support children and young people who are coping with grief.

The podcast also includes an interview with McFly’s Tom Fletcher, who discusses his new book, Pudsey and the Thread of Hope, created for this year’s BBC Children in Need appeal. The story explores themes of loss, courage and connection – echoing the conversations explored in the podcast.

Pudsey and the Thread of Hope has been adapted into a new animated film, due to be broadcast on BBC One next month, and St Clare Hospice was consulted as advisors on the script, ensuring the portrayal of childhood grief is handled with care and authenticity.

Amanda said: “Supporting children through grief is one of the most important parts of my work. Being able to share guidance with families across the country through this podcast is a privilege – and I’m proud to represent the specialist support we provide at St Clare Hospice.”

St Clare Hospice offers a range of groups and support services to help children and families navigate loss with compassion and understanding through its Echo Project, which is funded by Children in Need.
