St Clare Gardening Volunteers

“On a chance visit to the Harlow garden centre I spotted a poster appealing for volunteer gardeners at St Clare. It was just what I was looking for!”

“After a phone call and a meeting with the volunteer coordinator I was taken outside to see the stunning grounds. Even with the background noise of motorway traffic I felt I was retreating into a haven of peace and tranquillity.”

“With gardens as large as they are, it was no surprise that I was welcomed with open arms. I encountered a complete mix of people coming from a wide variety of backgrounds and different careers. I found I was given the responsibility for a large plot next to a lovely volunteer, Bob.”

“It can be hard work at times as we battle with the elements (some have even been known to turn up in the snow!) to say nothing of the appetites of the deer and rabbits. Despite this, there is great team-work and a real satisfaction in the results of our efforts.”

“I have to say, Tuesday has become one of the happiest days of my week – largely down to the fun and laughter, and the unforeseen bonus of the companionship and friendships which have developed amongst us.”

“I know I speak for everybody in saying how very aware we are of the suffering of patients, of their family members and friends, and we want to complement the work of the hospice in creating a place of peace and beauty for everyone.”
