Emily took on a cycle challenge in memory of her beloved Grandad and to raise vital funding for St Clare!

Emily Chapman (11 years) from Great Bardfield, has completed a cycle challenge in honour of her beloved grandfather, David Barron, and to raise funds for the hospice charity who cared for him.

Emily undertook a 29 mile cycling challenge to raise vital funds for St Clare Hospice, after we cared for her grandfather in 2015, and to honour his memory. In September 2017, Emily cycled the 29 mile circular route around her home village of Great Bardfield, with support from her fellow cycling fan and mother, Liz Chapman, and family friend Claire Bullock.

Emily has so far raised over £200 for St Clare, which is enough to fund four 90-minute Hospice at Home visits to patients receiving care and support in their own homes.

Reflecting on her cycle challenge experience, Emily said:

“It was amazing cycling and raising money for St Clare. I really enjoyed doing it and I am sure that my Grandad would have been very proud of me.”

Emily’s mother, Liz Chapman, also commented:

“I only facilitated the day. This was completely Emily’s idea. Cycling was my fathers’ passion and Emily has clearly got this passion within her as well. It was a brilliant experience cycling with her and it brought back so many fond memories of the rides I did with my father over the years.”

Emily’s challenge follows the cycling tradition of her mother Liz Chapman (43 years) who completed a 200 mile bike ride in July 2016 on the first anniversary of David Barron’s death, when Liz cycled from his hometown of Sheffield to Dunmow, raising over £1,500.

David Barron, who lived in Dunmow for more than 40 years, was a pillar of the community, working for the NHS and volunteering for the RNLI. Mr Barron was cared for by St Clare Hospice until he passed away on 3 July 2015 at the age of 77 years.
