Losing a child is a uniquely devastating experience. It challenges a parent’s sense of identity, purpose and future.

The emotions are complex: overwhelming sadness, shock, guilt, anger, loneliness and even numbness can co-exist, and all are valid. Every milestone – birthdays, anniversaries and holidays – can reignite grief, often catching families off guard.

The life-long grief of losing a child

This National Bereaved Parents Day (3rd July), we acknowledge the profound and life-changing grief experienced by parents who have lost a child. Whether the loss occurred recently or many years ago, the pain endures – a bond broken that no parent ever expects to face.

At GriefLine, we recognise that this deep and enduring pain does not have an expiry date, and that the grief of bereaved parents deserves ongoing, compassionate support. It is not something to ‘get over’, but rather something to learn to live with, one day at a time.

As such, we understand how isolating and overwhelming child loss can be. There is no right way to grieve, but there are ways to cope.

Four ways to cope with the loss of a child

1) Allow yourself to grieve fully

There is no timeline for grief. Give yourself permission to feel and express every emotion.

2) Talk about your child

Sharing memories helps keep your child’s memory alive and can be deeply healing. Speaking their name and celebrating the impact they had on your life can bring comfort.

3) Accept support

Let others help you – you don’t have to carry your grief alone. Lean on family, friends or grief professionals who can offer practical and emotional support.

4) Connect with other bereaved parents

Talking to others who have experienced the loss of a child can help you feel understood and less alone. Peer support can be a lifeline during the most difficult times.

Support for bereaved parents and families

St Clare Hospice offers bereavement support for parents and siblings, including grief counselling, group sessions and safe spaces to share. Our team understands the complexities of child loss and walks alongside families through every stage of grief.

By calling GriefLine, we can also signpost you to your nearest St Clare Bereavement Café so you can connect with others who understand what you’re going through, or provide information about our Children and Young Person Bereavement Support Service.

You don’t have to face child loss alone

On Bereaved Parents Day, we invite you to light a candle, share your child’s name or simply take a moment to remember. If you or someone you love is grieving the loss of a child, reach out. Call GriefLine on 01279 945089 at any time and one of our trained bereavement volunteers will return your call within 72 hours.

Whether you need a compassionate listening ear, guidance on the support available, or help finding services that are right for you and your family, you’re grief matters and we’re here to help.

Because no parent should have to navigate the loss of a child alone.
