Finding new love again after loss is…complicated. It’s joy tangled with guilt, love intertwined with longing. One moment, your heart soars with new possibilities, the next it aches for what was.

Pursuing a new romantic relationship after you’ve been bereaved is a deeply emotional experience. It brings joy and excitement but can also stir up feelings of guilt, sadness and uncertainty. How do you embrace a new love while still honouring the one you lost?

Love and grief can exist side by side

The truth is grief doesn’t vanish when love arrives—it simply finds a new place to exist.

If you’re in this space, know this: you’re allowed to love again. Here are some ways to navigate this complex journey:

1) Acknowledge your feelings

It’s normal to feel both happiness and sorrow. You may worry that moving forward means forgetting, but love is not a limited resource. Loving someone new doesn’t mean you’ve stopped loving who’s gone. It means your heart is still capable of expanding. You can hold space for both the past and the present without guilt.

2) Talk openly with your new partner

Open communication is key – both with yourself and your new partner. Let them know how you’re feeling, and don’t be afraid to share memories of your late partner. A healthy relationship will allow space for honesty and understanding.

3) Give yourself permission to be happy

Grief often comes with a sense of guilt, as if joy is a betrayal. But you’re allowed to feel happiness. Remind yourself that your late partner would want you to find love and companionship again. Moving forward doesn’t mean moving on – it means carrying their love with you in a new way.

4) Seek support when you need it

You don’t need to struggle in silence. If you want to talk, then call our GriefLine or come along to one of our St Clare bereavement cafes. Alternatively, speak to a trusted friend. Having a support system can help you process emotions and navigate this transition with clarity and self-compassion.

You can carry love from the past into the future

There’s no right or wrong way to grieve – or to love again. Allow yourself to feel, to grow and to embrace the beauty of new beginnings. Your heart is capable of holding both sorrow and love.
